There are actually a couple ways to answer your question, but in either case the answer remains the same.

If you are talking just about the series and the movie then:
Firefly the television series came first, then the motion picture Serenity followed.

However, if you are talking about those terms in reference to the ship flown in the series:
Seeing as the term Firefly refers to the class of vessel flown by Malcolm Reynolds and his merry band, perhaps bitterly named Serenity after the Battle of Serenity Valley, the term Firefly came first.

Firefly was like the best tv show and then they showed the eps in the wrong order and they didn't show them all, so i bought the dvds and then Serenity came out...and hopefully after Joss whedon finishes Wonder Woman he will go back and make a second Serenity.

Firefly.. The series aired, and was cancelled before the movie even began shooting.
