Here are some recommendations. The games I'd recommend with online play are Metroid Prime Hunters, Mario Kart DS, Animal Crossing Wild World, Tony Hawk's American Sk8land, and Star Fox Command. Good ones that don't go online are New Super Mario Bros, Asphalt Urban GT, Nintendogs, and Goldeneye Rogue Agent (I disagree with that game's reviews - I liked it a lot). Remember, it plays GBA games as well. Some of those which are fun are Zelda: A Link to the Past/Four Swords, Zelda: The Minish Cap, the Mario Advance series, Kirby and the Amazing Mirror, Mortal Kombat Tournament Edition, Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories, Banjo-Kazooie, and the Megaman Battle Network series.
The chat room thing, called Pictochat, isn't online - it's for chatting with people nearby, usually used at large events.
There are more games coming out which are also a lot of fun, like a new Kirby game, Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, and Final Fantasy 3.

The Nintendo DS is Nintendos latest and greatest hand held gaming system. It has duel screens (hence DS) with the top one being your standard screen and the bottom being a highly acurate and sensitive touch screen that is utilized differently depending on the game you play but always in a fun way.
My suggestions of games really stems from what type of game do you like? If you like puzzle games then I would most deffinatly suggest Tetris DS. It is a great twist on a classic game. For a more adventure type game, New Super Mario Brothers is a great game with lots to do. Mario Kart DS is a great raceing game as well.
You are right that it can access the network, but there is a bit of a twist. Nintendo has its own free wireless network called Nintendo WI-FI. You just need to go to any wireless hot spot like mcDonalds, Panera, Star bucks, or if you have a wirless conecction in your house it should work as well. The chat thing you see is not a part of the wifi network, while it can connect to the web the pictochat feature utilizes the DS' wireless connection feature. Anyone who also has a DS in somewhere between 30 to 60 feet can connect with you, and play games with you via the game down load option or do PictoChat with you.
The best feature about the DS going back to the WI-FI aspect is that most gams can be played against other people online. You can race people from all around the world with mario Kart, you can even play tetris against people too. It is a great system and please don't listen to that guy that suggested the PSP, while its a good system, DSs has outsold it hands down and it is better all around.

Dragon Rage and remon have the right stuff here! You can find out more about the DS online capabilites at www.nintendowifi.com. The best games? For me, I would have to say: Mario Kart DS, Metroid Prime Hunters, Super Mario 64 DS, Animal Crossing Wild World, New Super Mario Bros, I could go on and on, but you be the judge. The chat thing is called PictoChat and is included internally in the DS (that means you don't need to put in a Game Card/Pak). What you need to do with it, is have someone else who has a DS to enter the room you selected and from there you can send messages (mind the distance range limit). Enjoy! And Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

I like Nintendogs, Animal Crossing: Wild World and Trace Memory. But, I'm not you.
The chat, I think, is local.
You need games with a Wi-Fi compatibility. And a wireless router or Nintendo USB attachment for the computer.
Hope that helps!

Yes, you could go online with your DS Lite. But you have got to have a router (or you could buy their Wireless Adaptor and plug it in into your computer) and a Nintendo DS Browser.
As for games, I recommend this website:
http://www.gamespot.com/ds/index.html?tag=nav-top;ds
They have all DS game titles in there, plus reviews and screen shots.
Popular games includes Animal Crossing: Wild World, Trauma Center, Cooking Mama and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. Currently I'm playing Nintendogs, Elite Beat Agents and Big Brain Academy.
But ultimately, which game you will enjoy depends on which game genre you prefer. Hope you'll enjoy your DS Lite :)

It depends on the type of games you like. If you like hard violent games there is Metroid prime hunters and resident evil deadly silence, if you like quiet simple games there is animal crossing and the soon to be released harest moon d.s., and if you like racers there is mario kart d.s. as well as need for speed carbon.
Its all about personal taste, but there is something for everyone.

The Nintendo DS (ニンテンドーDS, Nintendō DS?, sometimes abbreviated NDS or DS, and as iQue DS in China) is a handheld game console developed and manufactured by Nintendo first released in 2004. The console features a clamshell design, with two LCD screens inside - one of which is a touch sensitive screen. The Nintendo DS also features a built-in microphone and supports wireless IEEE 802.11 (WiFi) standards,[7] allowing players to interact with each other within short range (10–30 m, depending on conditions) or online with the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service. The system's code-name was "Project Nitro," which is where the letters NTR in the serial number written on the back of game cards and the system itself come from.
The console's name officially refers to Developers' System, from Nintendo's belief that the system "gives game creators brand new tools which will lead to more innovative games for the world's players", and also "Dual Screen." [8]
On March 2, 2006, Nintendo released the Nintendo DS Lite in Japan, a redesigned system which is slimmer and lighter with brighter screens and some other refinements. It was released later that year in North America, Europe and Australia. Since the release of the DS Lite, Nintendo has decided to discontinue the original DS[9].

In selected titles (Including but not limited to Mario Kart DS, New Super Mario Bros. and Meteos), it is possible to play multiplayer games with other Nintendo DS users using only one game card. The distance for this to be effective is about 60 feet. The Nintendo DS unit downloads the necessary data from another unit running the game. There is also a multiplayer Wi-Fi feature. At certain hotspots, or Wi-Fi enabled areas, you can hook up and play with DS owners around the world.
DS Download Play is an adaptation of the Game Boy Advance's popular "single cartridge multiplayer" feature, adapted to support the system's wireless link capabilities; players without the game search for and download content, while players with the game broadcast it. Some games also use this feature to transmit a playable demo of the game to players who do not own a copy. The downloaded data is available as long as the DS is turned on.
Also, in November 2004, Nintendo announced plans to make download kiosks available to certain retail stores and other public places that would transmit a signal for a Nintendo DS in the area to pick up, and download a demo of a game using the DS Download Play feature. As of 2006, there are now download kiosks placed in select EB Games, GameStop, Game Crazy, Toys R Us, Wal-Mart, and Target stores. As with normal Download Play, the downloaded demo(s) are not permanent, and will be deleted when the system is shut down. Nintendo has also said that they may begin providing downloadable demos or other content directly from a user's Wii console system using the online store channel built into the system.
The Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection is an online service run by Nintendo to facilitate free Internet play in compatible Nintendo DS and Wii games through the use of Wi-Fi connection. The service was launched in North America on November 14, 2005 with the release of Mario Kart DS, Tony Hawk's American Sk8land, and on December 5, 2005, Animal Crossing: Wild World. The new release of the Nintendo DS browser which is the size of a regular game card allows the user to browse regular web pages through a Wi-Fi connection.
