find the values of x and y that ensure each quadrilateral is a parallelogram.
3x+17=2y

4x-y=y

and the second problem..

(x-5)=(2y+12)

(1/2)x=2y-15

i know you use substitution to solve the equations.. but i dont remember how. HELP PLEASE!!

1)
3x+17=2y
4x-y=y

=>
3x+17=2y
4x=2y .............. -
--------------
-x + 17 = 0
x = 17

=>
4(17)-y=y
2y = 68
y = 34

S = {(17, 34)}

2)
(x-5)=(2y+12)
(1/2)x=2y-15

=>
x-2y=12+5
x=4y-30

=>
x-2y=17
x-4y=-30 ....... -
----------------
2y = 47
y = 47/2

=>
x-2(47/2)=17
x-47=17
x = 64

S = {(64, 47/2)}

3x + 17 = 2y- - - - -Equation 1
4x - y = y- - - - - - -Equation 2
- - - - - - - - -

Substitute method equation 2

4x - y = y

4x - y + y = y + y

4x = 2y

4x/4 = 2y/4

x = 1/2y

The answer is x = 1/2y

Insert the x value into equation 1

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
3x + 17 = 2y

3(1/2y) + 17 = 2y

1.5y + 17 = 2y

1.5y + 17 - 1.5y = 2y - 1.5y

17 = 0.5y

17/0.5 = y

34 = y

The answer is y = 34

Insert the y value into equation 1

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

3x + 17 = 2y

3x + 17 = 2(34)

3x + 17 = 68

3x + 17 - 17 = 68 - 17

3x = 51

3x/3 = 51/3

x = 17

The answer is x = 17

Insert the x value into equation 1

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Check for equation 1

3x + 17 = 2y

3(17) + 17 = 2(34)

51 + 17 = 68

68 = 68

- - - - - - - - - - - -

Check for equation 2

4x - y = y

4(17) - 34 = 34

68 - 34 = 34

34 = 34

- - - - - - - - - - -

The solution set is { 17, 34 }

3x+17=2y --(1)

4x-y=y --(2)

from (2): 4x - y = y
4x = 2y (subsitute into (1) )

from (1): 3x +17 = 4x
x = 17 (substitute into (2)
from (20: 4(17) = 2 y
2(17) = y
y = 34

hope u can rmb how to do and be indepentant

2006-12-08 00:53:10 · answer #3 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

3x+17=2y;4x-y=y
3x-2y=-17
4x-2y=0
----------------

subtract from the above two you get
-x=-17
so
x=17
for y
put it in a equation
4x-2y=0
4*17=2*y
y=34
so x=17;y=34

(x-5)=(2y+12);(1/2)x=2y-15
x-5-2y-12=0
x-2y-17=0
x/2-2y+15=0
--------------------
x/2-32=0
x=64
y=47/2
