The blight of modern television. They are much cheaper to produce than traditional shows. As such, networks are happy to get mediocre ratings off of reality shows instead of expending the capital to create a really stunning show that would attract only a moderately better market share.
TV is about selling advertising and reality shows do the job. However, there is a dearth of really quality entertainment on right now. When a show comes along that's good, the networks rarely give it the chance it deserves because of cost. I'm sick to death of reality shows. Could a Playhouse 90, a Perry Mason, a Kojak, a Hill Street Blues, a Gunsmoke, or a St. Elsewhere even have a chance on a modern network? Hell no. Instead we've got some cheapened down real life Gilligan's Island. Please.

If they were at all Reality, then i would say "innocent voyeuristic fun", However, since they are mostly all Obviously fake and dramatized, then i would say that they are the blight of modern television.

Blight of Modern TV. Scripted Television is, or rather can be, so much better, but reality shows are cheap to produce and therefore lucrative.

Blight in my opinion. It just goes to show you how little creativity is left in Hollywood. Case in point, why are they remaking everything. Do something new for a change!
