After seeing what goes on in some of the care homes I am horrified that anyone would consider putting a loved one in a home. I only have one parent left and I wouldn't dream of "putting" her anywhere. If the time comes when she can longer live on her own she will move in with me or her other child.
If a person has no close family and cannot live on his own, then I suppose a residential home for the aged would be the only choice, but when there is family, a home should be a last resort unless there are serious medical problems that make living with family impracticable or unavoidable.

I already have.
I converted my double garage, study and cloakroom into a kitchen/diner/lounge, bathroom and bedroom. Luckily the rooms were set out just right so I could do that. She has her own front and back door and comes and goes as she likes, a completely self-contained annex.
As for putting her in one of these hideous warden controlled flats, or worse, in one of these private ones where several people have to share, meals are served at a certain time, have to go to bed when the owners say so.
Just ask yourself this - would you live in one?
It never entered my head that my mother would go into one of those homes. As for the rest of my family, they were all for it, bast**ds.
Luckily my mum is fit and well, even though she is 82, but even if she wasn't, I would take care of her. She was there for me as a child, wiping my bottom, feeding me, dressing me, bathing me, when the tables are turned and it's me who takes on the mother role and she becomes my child.
For all the sacrifices she had to make for me, it's the least I can do and it should be that way for everyone.

My mom died almost 8 years ago, but I wouldn't have put her in a home, loved her so much and would have looked after her for ever.

Had no choice, my mother is in a nursing home after having a stroke, I am disabled and so is my wife and we are both unable to give her the 24 hour care that she needs.

Sounds expensive. Considering poisoning - watching recent events over here and in Russia with interest.....no, not really - I hope they live about the same time as one another - as they really need to be a "couple"

my parents are both smokers and have been their entire lives. they did lots of stupid things in their younger days and still continue to not take care of themselves. so, yes when they can no longer take care of their-selves they will be going to a nursing home. why should i suffer for things they brought on themselves. i love them but that would be a huge burden and i have enough problems of my own. sorry, that's just the way it is.

my father passed away in 1990, and I took care of him before he died, and now I take care of my mother. As long as I am able, she will never go into a home.

They're not living in home now? Where are they living? In the street? I think you should take them in. It's cold outside.

They can put themselves in a home! I'm not paying for their retirement.
