normally when xp is installed on hard drive connected to motherboard A. the installation is uniquely done to fit that specif motherboard . like boot, logging settings ,
now if you move your hard drive to another computer with motherboard B you hard drive will show the windows xp screen and do what its meant to do . but certainly it will find something that is not compatible with its setting . so the best to do ( if a permanent change ) just try to install a fresh copy of windows on the new motherboard , and i will guaranty it will work
hope that helps

The problem is that the motherboard doesnt recognize the kind of version unless you install the HD while you put the CD of Windows.... Let me know if you need help cuz I got all the versions of Windows. I used to work in computers before.

No, but a lot of times, you will have to format the hard drive on the computer you are installing the new hard drive. I've had many problems with Dell computers that would not let me format a hard drive on another computer and then plug it into a Dell. I'd get a blue screen error. I was told that you have to format the harddrive on the computer it will be used in.

Also, I think XP only allows you to format your harddrive with XP so many times before you have to call a 800 # to get a new registration key. It's free, but you'll have to deal with India customser service.

is it the main drive? is it set to boot from the drive you are putting in? can you reinstall windows from the beginning? sadly, i think your copy of windows is limited to your motherboard, and not your hd. if it were me, i'd reinstall

Microsoft activation is a pain in these cases. You will probably have to call them.
