You don't need a man to physically be there, but, yes, you do need sperm. The sperm fertilizes the egg, resulting in a cell that reproduces over and over until it is a fetus. The woman's body produces and egg and the man's body produces the sperm and both are necessary for the result to be a baby. The egg must be fertilized by a sperm, which has the genetic material in it essential for approximately 1/2 of what the baby will become (a blonde, an idiot, etc)

Yes, pregnancy can only occur if an ovum of a female is fertilized by the sperm of a male of the same species. A man and a woman in this case. Even in the case of test tube babes the fertilization process is done under specific conditions in the lab, mimicking the female uterus.

However there is phenomenon called pseudo-pregnancy (false pregnancy) where the body of a woman prepares itself for pregnancy and the symptoms of a pregnancy appear, even when there is no real pregnancy. This happens due to certain factors psychological, hormonal, physiological etc. In this case there is no fertilization of ovum, but the woman experiences all characterisitcs of a normal pregnancy.

Male chromosome sets in sperms are essential for sexual reproduction in man. But, some say, there is a very very rare chance of asexual reproduction like parthenogenesis (as in some insects) is possible in man also. I am not sure. Christians believe that Christ was born from virgin Mary. Was it a case of parthenogenesis?
