There is no question about it, I would have done the same thing for my family. They stayed put for more than a week before he ventured off. It's so sad. God bless the Kim family-at least his kids will know, "Daddy died being their hero".

All survival experts say - if you get lost, stay put, stay with your vehicle, stay with your group etc. I beg to differ. Even though it is a good idea in many cases, it can be fatal in some.
For example, do you know a story of a US army officer who got lost in mountains with his 7-year old son while skiing? They stayed put for a week, then the father decided to leave his son and go for help. Now they are both alive because he did it - as it appeared later, rescue helicopters were searching in a completely wrong area and they would have never been found, hadn't the father taken this step.
What about another story where a family with a small baby got stranded in a car in snowstorm (so much resemblance to Kim's case!). Again, they all took off on foot, but got lost. Then the father returned to the car and continued on the road until he got rescued. They are all alive today because he did it.
The Kim family did everything right for survival - they stayed in the vehicle for a week, just as survival experts recommend. But seeing that the kids might not make it, James Kim did what he had to do - he went for help. Too bad that he was underdressed for the weather (tennis shoes, no hat). Otherwise he might have made it. Being in this situation he couldn't have known whether help would come on time, so he took matters in his own hands. Respect & rest in peace!

I hope that I would have the strength and courage to.The man is a true example of selflessness and heroism. There is no nobler way to go than to be willing to sacrifice your own life for the ones you love. The Kim family obviously is mourning right now,but they hopefully will take comfort one day in the fact that their father/husband showed more bravery, courage, and honor than most people could ever even fathom.I don't know if they believe in God,but I know that James Kim is with Jesus right now.We should all have the guts that man had!!!!!!!

I hadn't heard about the story until later when the searchers say the clothing and hot spots. I was praying really hard that is one would turn out differently.

James Kim in my opinion is a hero. I know it was his family - however he risked his life for his family!!!

Everyone has been touched by this story in one way or another

Sorry, I have to agree with SpinKick on some of his points. When you're stranded in a car with your family knowing they'll have heat until can get help, don't sit in the car for a week and hope someone will find you out in the wilderness. The guy traveled 10 miles and ended up a mile from his car. That's what killed him. I feel sorry for him, but dying doesn't make you a Saint.

I KNOW!!!

I'd do the same, no doubt about it. I take comfort in the feeling that his spirit led that helicopter to his family for the big rescue.

What a sad holiday this will be for the family, and I'm thankful that it wasn't as bad as it could have been...the whole family could have perished.
