Good question but my opinion is different.
I think captain must be veteran player like Kapil Dev or Sunil Gavaskar.
They know better what to do.
We can see non playing captains in tenis.
Then why not in cricket ?
Make Harbhajan Singh as a captain like our PM is.

Well as a best captain I will go with Ganguly, because if you are the captain then you have to have that kinda persona and respect which i think Rahul does not posses, of course he is a worldclass batsmen but not a better captain than Ganguly. The opposition has to fear and respect the captain which i think Dravid is not getting. And if you say for the future of the team then of course Ganguly is much better captain than Dravid. He has an attacking mentality which many of the captains lack. When he is on the field it always seems that the game is alive.

Of Course Ganguly. Dravid, as someone mentioned here is a "student" of the game and no doubt a wonderful batsman, a shrewd player (both on and off the field). He is a master strategist and a keen reader of the playing conditions (pitch). But he is no leader of men and he is not a tactician - his form has suffered due to captaincy, just like all his predecessors and he is TOO VALUABLE for that!! He should be the head of the indian batting (battering) ram - not the captain.

Ganguly on the other hand leads from the front. He wears his emotions on the sleeve, and takes his shirt off on the face of stiff upper lip (british). He is also a doer more than a thinker and pays for it by losing his captaincy due to ICC ban and never regains it due to the politics among BCCI officials/ Selectors/ Teammates.
He is not the most technically competent batsman, nor the most strategic thinker. But tactically he is brilliant and his intuitions are unmatched in the Indian team.

I think Ganguly should be the captain and Dravid should be the batting mainstay, without the burden of captaincy on him. It is not demeaning Dravid - just as Tendulkar not being the captain does not demean him. It just underlines the importance that each player has due to their unique talents. Some lead, some attack and some defend like a wall.

see these are two different personalities.i go with dravid because he unlike ganguly does not take off his shirt when the team wins and bites his nails when the team needs him the most.ganguly believes himself to be the master of the game.dravid thinks himself to be a student.dravid is agood thinker.he leads from the front too unlike ganguly.v need to give rahul some tme.and he is agood captain.afterall he was nominated for the captain of the year.is the team isnt doing well it isnt dravid's fault.dravid leads in his own and better way.so dravid is a much much better leader than sourav.

see these 2 are different personalities.they lead differently.sourav was given 5 yrs and rahul has just been given 1 year.there isnt a set type of way to lead.one need not be aggressive like others.one can yield good results by our own way.thats what rahul does.he is a good stategist, thinker and above all an example to follow for all players.his form in the last 5 yrs has been bradmanesque .i disagree with those who feel that rahul's form suffered due to his captaincy.form is a temporary thing whereas class is permanent.also rahul's form in the past 5 games that he has played has been good.he scored 4,then 51,then 49 in the champions trophy.then made79 in the practice match.then made 18 and then 63 in the 2 odis.one suffers from loss of form in one's career.on the other hand it is ganguly whose form dipped due to some reasons in his batting plus the pressure of captaincy.rahul has always advocated that captaincy is just an added responsibility not a burden.also rahul has always done well under pressure.
we indians feel that in order to be a good captain one should be aggressve but this is not true.dravid is a cool and calm person which makes it possible for him to think properly in pressure games.also india has only won one main overseas series under ganguly's captaincy-the natwest series.in all other series rahul was the captain in few games.in the natwest series too ganguly didnt contribute much.it was yuvraj and kaif who made india win the series.
many experts say that rahul is a good captain .that's why he was nominated for the best skipper award this year.rahul shares an equally close relationship with the players and they respect him a lot.i am not saying that ganguly wasnt a good captain but he had some negative points too.one he was too emotional-he wore his heart on his sleeve.second his bad patch didnt seem to end.3 he didnt know how to behave with the media.of course he was a good captain and india won almost 50% of the games they played under him but lets not forget that other players, rahul being the most prominent played the key roles in those games.lastly i would like to say that rahul is a very good human being which makes him go way ahead of ganguly

This is a fight Saurav Ganguly never thought he will face, a successful Test captain with 19 wins. But as luck would have, the International Cricke Council (ICC)-imposed ban for slow over-rates throws out this 33 years old, 10000-run garland holder superb cricketer.
Not that 32 years old Rahul Dravid has a bad record, the reigning ICC cricketer of the year, is India’s batting star with 2,082 runs in the last 20 Tests at an average of 74.35 which has brought up his team to third position in the ICC’s Test rankings.
In contrast, Dravid aggregates 7,696 runs in 89 Tests at 57.86 with 20 centuries. In 257 one-dayers, he has 8,319 runs with 10 hundreds. Dravid has 7-9 from 17 games with one no-result.
Five selectors now have to spent sleepless nights before taking this crucial decision . “Sourav is a proven leader of men. He was the captain before the ban and should get it back. But I am only speaking for myself. I don’t know what the others think.” an anonymous selector gave this opinion.

Ganguly should be compared with one & only Ricky Ponting & none else. Dravid is no where near Ganguly.
