Turn it off, let it cool down some, repeat until thawed.
50/50 chance you might get away with no damage.
Add Anti freeze. A gallon of Anti freeze (full strength) added to your coolant system should get you through the winter.
When I froze my Grand Am the Nylon hose going to the Heater Core Split and I developed a coolant leak that would find it's way into the car until repaired.

as well safe practices from freezing, different projects coolant performs is discouraging rust and and lubricating the water pump. Coolant looses the rust safe practices and lubricating safe practices after about 2 years. even as you probably did not damage some thing interior the little while period, interior the lengthy run, like this coming wintry climate you should drain and fill up your gadget taking care to apply the right ratio. you gained't get each and each and every of the former coolant out so i ought to err on the component to slightly richer blend of coolant to water. If the tap water on your section has a lot of minerals in it use bottled eating water from the dispensers on the food market, it doesn't require more advantageous than 3-4 litres. be confident to empty the overflow reservoir besides and fill up with sparkling coolant/water blend. also visual show unit the coolant element to be particular there are not any leaks. the very truth you had to operate water interior the first position will strengthen the chance that is leaking or probably the radiator cap is undesirable.

It might be too late , but you should have anti freeze mixed 50/50 with water in your cooling system. At this point, you could possibly have a cracked block. If you're lucky, maybe just a blown hose. If it is steaming really bad from the exhaust pipe, then it could be a blown head gasket. If it proves to be nothing really serious, then before this day is over, GET SOME ANTI FREEZE. Pull your dip stick to see if there is water in the oil. If not then it might not be a serious problem.

You cannot have only water in a vehicle in places where the temp. drops below 32 degrees. The water froze. Drain the cooling system and put a 50/50 mixture of coolant and water.
The antifreeze also has rust inhibitors and and additives to help protect your engine.
You should never use just water in your vehicle!!

Car engines are designed with freeze plugs, little aluminum or steel disks, that pop out when the water freezes to prevent damage to the engine block. They are located on both sides of the engine block. It is VERY possible that this is your problem.

To run plain water was not very smart, AT ALL, even a little bit. It sucks to be you right now with that expensive lesson learned.

it sounds like your thermostat got stuck in the open position and the steaming could be from either a small pinhole in one of your hoses or check the connections to the rad.and the motor.
Oh and by the way drain all the water out of your rad. and water pump system (flush it out) and put in a 50/50 mixture of anti-freeze and water in your rad. most anti-freeze now comes already mixed all you have to do is pour it in.

You need to have a 50/50 mixture of water and antifreeze in the radiator. If you don't it will freeze and overheat.

You need coolant. Water is only supposed to be a temp fix. Since it has overheated, you will need to replace the thermostat, coolant and bleed the system - providing you haven't done more damage.

Water has a freezing point of +32-deg F and causes corrosion.
Anti-freeze has a freezing point of -35-deg F and fights corrosion.
Nuff said.
