They tend to live vicariously through their children and grandchildren, They also hope to right their own mistakes as well...

Most people are obsessed with their children and can never do well enough in their own minds and when grandchildren come along they get a second chance to love them and care for them better.

I think that it is very true. I think that spending time with grandchildren and children help to bring back a sense of 'youth' that they feel they may have lost. It is sad that people do not take more time for elderly people. They have lived such a long time and have so much wisdom to share.

I find this to be true as well, and I believe the reason they are so fond of there family etc. is because they know they will not be on earth with their family for too much longer, and they want to know that they are still a part. Even though their usefulness in society is dying.

I believe they are ecspecially fond of grandschildren, because it reminds them of their youth that they enjoyed so long ago.

Oh..let me dote and kiss and pinch cheeks for Pete's sakes! My girls are my gift to this world because I am just an ordinary woman with extraordinary daughters and grandkids! I know how sweet they are at heart and how open they are to share that with others. I would like to think I had some influence..but I know they are their own people and I just happen to have given birth to them! I do know that my blood flows through them all and that is a very powerful realization! So..let me take a million photos and share all of them with my friends and brag..I am one proud grandma and Mom!

you are right
it is the result of a gathering realization of the fact that life is short and there are so many possibilities that you want your young loved ones to be aware of and so many problems you want them to avoid. you learned it all the hard way and many of your friends did not get old, so you want to warn and teach the young but they will not listen. But you never give up trying.

you sense your DNA as a strand of immortality that keeps you alive and so you want to give it some help and advice to continue in your image and name. the help and advice you would give yourself if you could go back in time. but you cannot. so you try with your progeny to instill in them the wisdom and lore you have accumulated before you die and it is too late. Sort of like in "Back to the Future II" when the bad guy goes back to give the book to himself at a young age but even then his young self will not listen to him.
This is a strong urge of mankind and is responsible for the gradual progress civilization makes over the centuries. if the granparents do not care about the progeny, then the planet suffers. It is one of the reasons guys like Paul Newman cares about the environment. it is not for him but for the grandchidren of us all.
So listen to grannie, grasshopper. I loved the scene in "Parenthood" where the old lady tells them that life is a roallercoaster. they do not get it. Please GET it.
I used common movies because i figure Voltaire and Sartre are beyond you kids these days. I know these movies are old to you but rather recent to me.

Most old people i know moved to florida and ignore the family, but if you are experiencing this then i think it is good, old people are near death and they need to feel as if they are loved and did something for the next generation, it makes their death easier
