I started my car this morning and let it run while I was gettng ready for work. I went out to leave and the temp gauge was in th red as far as it could go, so I popped the hood and the overflow still has adaquate water, but it was steaming really bad under the overflow and I cant figure out whats wrong. Any ideas?

You may have inadequate anti-freeze and it froze.
Check that first...
If this was a really cold day then it froze some where and wouldn't let the coolant circulate.

Could be thermostat, well now that it has overheated it should be replaced any ways.

Symptoms of a frozen coolant system would be that heats up very fast and the temp Gage goes all the way up in about ten minutes. Fix get it warm and add anti freeze and hope you didn't pop a freeze plug or crack the block or more likely damage your heater core.

Sounds like the water pump,or broken belt.DO NOT OPERATE if the gauge is in the red zone!!Your engine is mostly aluminum, and will be seriously damaged very quickly.Good luck.

Check your thermostat, also those engines are notorious for bad head gaskets. is your radiator cooling fan running? if you let the car sit and run with no fan it will not have any way to draw cool air through the radiator.

The most likely cause if the engine is full of coolant is your cooling fan is not coming on. Try turning the a/c on and see if the fan runs. If it does possible fan relay problem. If it does not possible fan motor.

It sounds like the water pump quit working or the thermostat is bad.
