i have Active Virus Shield, and spybot, Madesafe want me to upgrade. Do i need this??

If you have one or more trusty anti virus systems then you definetly don't need to upgrade.

Don't bother with AVG unless you want to pay for it come January. The present version isn't Vista compatible so they're making a new version which you'll have to pay for. If your team Active Virus with Spybot and Ad-Aware.. I think your pretty much covered.

You should always have more than one protection solution, but if you don't want to spend money for an up grade there are Free choices that do a well job.
AVG just updated their Free anti virus and I recommend it. Lavasoft also has Ad-aware Personal which is also free.

upgrades for spyware malware and other nasties are always good. alhtough from what your saying is that you computer is slow as well. do a disk defrag, checkdsk, and other maintainence as ait's always good to have a cleanup of clutter on the pc, which is one of the biggest casues of slowdown. also uninstall any unwanted programs that you do not use, if you are totaly stuck you could always take it to pc world, pay over the top for them to do nothing. Anyway if you look on the web about maintaing you pc, or find one of the dummies books at a local libary or buy one at the local mega computer companies
