They've all got cyanosis due to inbreeding.
There IS only one Smurfette, after all.

Smurfs suffer from acute cyanosis, a condition which causes the skin to turn blue due to deoxygenised haemoglobin near the skin's surface.
One may only speculate why the entire population is born with this condition. Some argue that it is down to many centuries of wreckless inbreeding; more likely to my mind is the fact that they live in the conifer forests of finland at altitude, where there is less available oxygen.
Hope that clears it up for you.

This is actually interesting. The creators of Smurfs are German. The German people dress their children in bright, primary colors..they believe that bright primary colors are cheery and stimulating. If you think back you'll notice that all the colors in the Smurf cartoons are maily primary colors and that everything is bright.
When concidering what color Smurfs should be it was thought that yellow would be too bright and contrast against background colors. Red wasn't accepted for obvious reasons. Blue was settled on; everything goes with blue, and the fact that Smurfs are blue makes it obvious that all though they have human characteristics and features Smurfs are not human. =)

One female Smurf to share among a load of bloke Smurfs! That's enough to make anyone miserable. I'm surprised they haven't cross bred with the Gummi Bears yet.

I heard a rumor once that it was because the makers of the smurfs wanted them to secretly represent death, and blue =death......Of course, I'm not sure how true that is....All I know is, I wasnt allowed to watch it as a child because of that.
