Make sure the jumper settings are what you want it to be. There is a little plastic piece that goes over the pins on the back of the drive. On top of the drive is a map of what the settings mean. The three different settings you can have are Cable Select, Master, or Slave. Usually the best and default is Cable Select, this is like automatic, you wouldn't want to switch to Master or Slave unless there was a problem with the hard drive being recognized.
Also, in BIOS on your computer, make sure that it is set to detect another drive if you are installing it on IDE 1 (there are two IDE buses, IDE 0 and IDE 1).
After the drive is installed, you can format it and such. If you don't know what I am talking about, just install the drive, if you have problems, then talk to someone to help walk you through some troubleshooting as to why the computer is not seeing your new hard drive.
And also, I forgot to mention the need to be careful of static electricity. Make sure everything is unplugged from the computer and it is powered off. If you have an anti-static electricity bracelet with a ground clip, wear it. If not, touch the metal cage of the computer before you grab the hard drive and install it. The amount of electricity in a shock that you can feel or hear when you touch something can damage the chips in computer devices.

if ur going to install it as a master drive, then u need to set the jumper settings to master, or if ur setting it as a secondary drive u need to set the jumper settings to slave...also u need to make sure that the hard disk is clean..as it is a used one, there is always the possibility of virus, spy ware or add ware...i guess that is more or less all u need to think about before installing the hard disk
then, when installing, u need to be careful handling the drive..make sure that u remove all the power cables from the CPU before trying to install the hard disk...

Always unplug the computer from the electrical source before you install hardware, then be careful not to damage the drive as you are installing it.
