This year, only my bf & I will exchange gifts. For the rest of family and friends, we all agreed to donate the money we would have spent on things we can all afford to buy for ourselves to the charity of our choice. I've donated to CHOW (Community Hunger Outreach Warehouse) in their names. I hope it will help.

Many things depending upon the type of person-
If he's illiterate and unemployed,I'd first get him into my house and teach him the alphabet. Then give him some easy books 2 read and thereafter keep giving him books with progressing levels.
If he's in rags and hungry,I'd first give him a bath, give him clean clothes then food.

If I don't find a person,
I'll go to a homeless shelter and donate food items, and new clothes(not old used ones, which I have no need of).
If i see any person sleeping on the roadside i will give a warm blanket and sweater.

The kids and I pick out a gift for some child who needs one. Usually there's a "Christmas Tree" in a bank or post office, we pick a card that what tell us exactly what the child wants, go and buy that and bring it back with the card attached. Toys for Tots is a great program for that.

At the very least, buy a gift for the "Angel Tree", but will see what other opportunities come up.
