The original meaning was a celebration of Christ's birth, therefore, Christ's Mass. It is not his actual birthday, of course. The early Church chose to celebrate His birth during the Pagan Mid-winter Festival, to help integrate Pagans into the Christian doctrine. Later, gifts were given in celebration of his birth...after all, it's a birthday party, right? Now, however, Christmas has become so commercialized that the true meaning has almost been lost...leading to more and more "Scrooges" and "Grinches" in the world...which is why the "Holidays" depress me so much, I suppose. It really isn't supposed to be just how many days off you can get from work!

Christmas - Christ Mass, the celebratory Mass of Jesus' entry into the world in flesh.

The traditional day on which the birth of the Savior is celebrated.

A season whose signature is generosity of spirit and joyfulness in the midst of a bleak meteorological season.

A family-oriented day when the word "family" can mean a lot more than just those who share your immediate genetic heritage.

A shot at some really nifty toys for the children.

Another great excuse to put off going on a diet. Or to explain falling off one.

A chance to think about the year past and try to A) figure out where you went wrong and B) figure out ways NOT to repeat the errors in the coming year.

A great excuse for the kids to stay up really really late (this mostly for those who have some kind of midnight Christmas Eve service to attend).

A mini-vacation right smack in the middle of the school year; and you don't even need icy roads to make it happen.

Enough?

Pure paganism!

One widespread explanation is the appropriation of the popular festivals of Sol Invictus and Mithras by the Christian church. Early Christian writers made frequent connections between the rebirth of the sun and the birth of the "Son" - Jesus, who they regarded as the son of God.
