Most text books, videos etc. merely describe what a Paradiddle is i.e. RLRRLRLL etc. etc. but don't actually explain too well how to execute it.

I have tried and tried but I don't seem to be getting anywhere in terms of building speed and fluency; any ideas?

A paradiddle is the the sound of a drum (especially a snare drum) beaten rapidly and continuously. To learn how to perform ta paradiddle I would suggest you contact a local band - Scouts, Army Cadets, Boys Brigade, etc Old films showing characters being executed often had drummers playing a paradiddle until the executee dropped through the platform observe the drummers next time one is on Telly.

LOL. It's a simple drum rudiment - the musicality comes from the application later - probably not with your hands, though. Listen, it sounds like you haven't been hitting it too long, so like every other rudiment, just get it to feel natural in your hands - basically, in good faith!

A cool way to apply it is that David Garibaldi thing: Eighth notes on the hi-hat, and a sixteenth note paradiddle between the kick drum and the snare - accenting the 2 and 4 on the snare drum.

All you can do is practise just start slow and get it right rather than trying to do it fast straight away and getting it wrong.
