You may have broken a bone. Does your lower arm hurt or is it just your wrist? Swelling/bruising?

You can certainly break a bone in your wrist without seeing a deformity or bones sticking out. You should go somewhere to get an x-ray. At the least, wrap it up, ice it and take some motrin.

use the PRICER principle for 72 hrs:
P - protect (wrap and bandage around your wrist)
R - rest (don't use your hand for anything!)
I - ice helps reduce the swelling and numb the pain
C - compression (via the bandages)
E - elevate to reduce swelling
R - referral (go to a doctor if it doesn't improve)
and take some mild pain killers
should be fine within 72hrs since it sounds like you just sprained your ligamnets

Ice pack first to help reduce the swelling as it starts...then later some warmth like a hot washcloth to reduce the pain.

Wrap your wrist with an elastic bandage. Sounds like you sprained it.
