The best option would be for you to just get a wireless router and connect your internet to that, then run a cable from the router to your desktop, and have your laptop connect to it wirelessly. This way you won't need your desktop computer to be on to be able to access the internet, and little setup is needed. Here's an example of a wireless router I'm talking about.

If you really want to buy a wireless LAN PCI card you'll need to take the following steps.
1. Install the card with the instructions included with it.
2. Go to start and then click control panel.
3. open network connections.
4. Right click on your local area connection, then go to properties.
5. Go to the advanced tab on the top and check the box that allows internet connection sharing and press okay.
6. right click on your wireless connection and click properties.
7. click on the option Internet protocol(TCP/IP) in the box and click properties.
8. Click the option that says use the following ip address and enter 192.168.0.2 in the box below that, then just click in the subnet mask box. You may need to change the 192.168.0.2 number if it conflicts with other things in your network.

I have an NTL set and I think it is the same as the telewest setup.....they refer to the cable box as a router, which acts as a broadband connection and a cable TV reception box
it is not wireless, you will need a separate wireless router to make a wireless connection
you will also need to have a wireless connection for your desktop. Belkin do a cheap external antenna that will connect into your USB port and will handle the wireless connection without even taking off the desktop's cover.
if you are lucky, you may already have wireless facility inbuilt into your laptop.....if not, you will need a wireless card for it, or the belking device will work on your laptop, too
the wireless router will come with full instructions to set up and secure it. You just plug it into the cable box, where you used to plug in the Ethernet cable from the desktop

Your PC is connected through a wired router, but you want to ADD a wireless connection.
Get a Wireless Router for your Laptop and PC. Connect the Desktop PC through one of the wired ports, and connect your wireless laptop through this wired connection. Disgard (or sell) your old router, since you do not need it.
When you use a single router for this, your PC and Laptop will have a common local area network, so your Laptop can use the Printer with your PC.... Both Computers can share files with each other. If you try this with two routers, you will find many problems to get the two separate LANS to talk to each other.
Good luck and Happy Computing!

You need a wireless router. You said you had a router for the desktop, but did not say if it was wireless. If not, you will need to replace that router with a wireless one. The wireless router will broadcast a signal that your laptop's wireless card can pick up.
The router will come with an install CD and instructions that will walk you through setting up the wireless network. It is pretty simple. Should take about 15-30 minutes.

You could connect bordband it wirelessly from your Desktop to your Laptop (using an ad-hoc connection)
Though I would suggest that you buy a wireless router and connect it phissically (using an etheranet cable) to your desktop, and connect it wirelessly to your laptop (the advantage u would get is that you can use your laptop with boardband without having to turn on your desktop)
GOOD LUCK!

You need a wireless Router plus Two Wireless adaptors. One for the laptop plus one for the Desktop. You'll need to connect the Wireless router intially to your desktop to configure it then disconnect and configure the adaptors. That Laymen languege for you.

If your connection is setup with a password, and you know it... you should be able to access it with your wireless card in your laptop. Use your laptop to do a search for wireless networks while close to your router (in your house I assume) and when it finds that network, connect to it.

What I did was bought a wireless router instead. It would probably require you to plug your telewest broadband modem into the wireless router and go from there. It's working perfect for me.
Here's something else to check out.

first you need a wireless router, then you're going to need a wireless transmitter/reciever for your laptop. it may be built in, or you may need to purchase a wireless adaptor.
