To be caught red-handed means to be caught in the act of committing a crime (probably a reference to blood on one's hands).

The Japanese used to brush urushiol (the sap from poison ivy) on their temple money, so as to catch thieves "red-handed" when the oil would cause them to break out into a rash. This explanation is referenced in the 1990 book, "The Doctor's Book of Home Remedies".

"You have been caught red handed." Or "i caught you with your pants down."
It means that then person was found to be doing something wrong, or saying somthing that was incorrect. It is were a person is caught in the middle of a lie and the other person has their information or proof to disclaim the other person.

Redhanded (one word) is to be found "in a situation of inescapable guilt" and is usually used in the phrase to be caught redhanded. So, you are caught in the act -- and you may have a red face (be embarrassed) as well!
