Is it ROOT? Or support? Or what?
And how do we call the people who root or support the team?
SUPPORTERS or what? Please, tell me ALL about it. I am NOT a native and need to talk about this issue tonight at school.

I would say the word to use would be "fan". It is shortened version of the word fanatic. A fanatic according to the dictionary is a person marked or motivated by an extreme, unreasoning enthusiasm, as for a cause.
A fan roots for and supports their team.

You "support" a team.

Someone that supports a team can be a "fan" or a "supporter."

To "root" for someone, you don't necessarily need to be a fan or a supporter, I think to "root" for someone just means you want them to win a particular game or league, you don't neccessarily have any alliance to the team.

Fans and supporters usually have a special commitment to that team.
