The pay is not as good as jobs in the private sector but the benefits and the job security are often better. In the US, as your years increase you get additional vacation time added to the normal 2 weeks you start off with, up to about 5 weeks after 20 years of service. You also get, on average, 12 paid sick days per year which you get paid a certain pertcentage of if you don't use it all, 13 paid holidays, and 3 paid personal days. Some agencies allow paid bereavement days in the event of a death in your immediate family, up to 5 paid days as needed. Most provide uniforms and work shoes/boots necessary to do the job, with replacements as needed anualy. Most provide medical coverage for the worker and their family, wife/husband and children, and most provide a life insurance policy for the worker as well. Most have prescription plans for low cost prescription drugs, some have dental and eye care plans. Most have human resource departments which offer special help for employees with problems and their families. Drug or alcohol problems, marriage counciling, phychiatric help for stress or depression, financial advice in setting up retirement needs or childrens education funds etc, tuition reimbursement for job related education courses. Upon retirement most civil servants will receive a pension based on the years of service put in. The more years you work the more you collect in retirement. Times are changing though and benefits are being cut back so make sure you know what you will be intitled to when you retire. I have seen decisions made that took away medical coverage, once garnteed to employees after they retired, because they did not have at least 12 years on the job when the the change was made. I was lucky as I had 14 years in at the time but some people missed the cutoff by months and they lost out. Right now in New Jersey the crooked politicians are trying to tamper with, or reduce, public employee retirement benefits because they, the politicians, have been quietly diverting pension funds for years and now the shortage is being realized. As usual the crooked politician wants the small guy to take hit for the politicians plunder/blunder!
