I lie to people when expect me to entertain them and tell them a good story. I also sometimes lie to not tell the whole story. I also often lie to get out of doing things. Usually I lie to people I don't respect though and to tell them a story that will teach them something about why I don't respect them. I often lie when trying to make a point because its a whole lot more believable if I say it from experience than from opinion. I only tell lies that help people realize the truth.

In general I think it's a lack of confidence and a way to get attention. It may also have become a habit because no one calls them on their lies. It also may be due to immaturity and living in a fantasy world. All of these were valid in my case when I was younger.
