He is constantly licking his lips and the top one cracks and bleeds often. We have a cold winter, so the heat is on, but we run a humidifier in his room to help. I put Aquaphor on his lips religiously, but he ends up licking or rubbing a lot of it off. Any suggestions?

Hi there. You have gotten good answers.
I would make sure that he is getting lots of fluids also, he could be a bit dehydrated. I would also use come chapstick or petroleum jelly. Just keep rubbing a tiny bit on his lips. Keep an eye on him and as I said, give hime plenty of opportunity to drink water. It does not have to be juice. If you are nursing him, nurse him a little extra.
The humidifier is a great idea, especially in his room at night.
Always a good idea to run this by your doctor too. If this is your first baby you could use some advice.
He could also have a bit of a stuffy nose that is causing him to breath thru his mouth too much. That will cause a baby's lips to become chapped.
I am sure it is nothing to be too worried about. Sounds like he has a good Mom!

Make sure he is getting plenty of fluids; you don't want him to get dehydrated. It's okay for babies to drink water.....it doesn't have to be milk or juice all the time.

Did his doc say it was okay to put auqaphor on his lips? I would be concerned that it would make him sick or give him diarrhea if he licks it off.

The humidifier is a great idea. Keep it on wherever he is.

If you are still concerned, call his pediatrician. Good luck.

give him plenty of water. also, on most chap sticks it says don't apply under the age of 6 months since your baby is 7 months obviously most chapsticks can be applied to his lips. try applying it while he is asleep that way it will sit on his lips and the cracked areas while he's sleeping. and you can periodically (at least while he naps during the day) go in and re-apply the chapstick. since he'll be sleeping he won't be likely to lick it off.

Have you spoken with the pediatrician? Your baby could by slightly dehydrated. Give him a little more water when you can.Try Vaseline petroleum jelly on a Q-tip while he is asleep.Don't worry too much. Babies are tough!

Good luck to you and the baby.

Our doctor said aquaphor but we had the same problem...try chap stick, its meant to be licked and it tastes good too. We used Cherry flavor and she loved it...good luck and happy winter!

sounds a bit like dehydration. talk to your doctor. Use Vaseline on his lips, will help soften them and keep them from getting worse.
