i like the sound of a cello better, because of the deeper tone. and no, a bass is not the same as a cello. it is much larger, and a lower tone. cello is the one that you can play sitting down, is maybe shoulder high to a seated person. a bass must be played standing, and is taller than most people.
i like to listen to all types of instruments; different sounds, different feelings. i personally would choose cello, but go with the sound you like best. good luck.

Although the cello and the bass come from the same family, there are some differences. A bass is much larger and plays notes at a lower octave. A bassist usually plays their instrument standing up, While a celloist plays sitting down with the cello in-between their knees.
As far as which to learn? That's simply a matter of personal choice. I've played the violin for the past 10 years and I find it to be a marvelous instrument. There are many styles of music that sound great on a violin, such as classical, country, Irish fiddling, etc.
The important thing to realize is that the violin and cello are not that different, aside for the size difference. The notes are same and the instruments are played with similar bowing and fingering techniques, so the only real difference is the octave. Therefore, one could learn to play both (or even all four members of the violin family) without much added effort.

Cello and the Double Bass(also known as just "Bass") are not the same instrument. The Double bass is probably twice as big as a cello. It aslo has a much lower registar.
And, as for cello and violin...ehhh it's a tough choice. I play violin in the Pittsburgh Youth SYmphony, and I love it. I love always getting to play the melody (I'm in the first violin section), and the violin is more portable than a cello. However...I love the rich, deep sound of a good cellist. However, cello parts in orchestra scores are usually not as exciting. So, I think it depends on your personailty. If I had the chance to go back and "re-pick" an instrument to play...I might still have chosen violin, just because I enjoy playing the melody...but cello can have such a deeper sound. For cello, you might need a wider hand-span, because the intervals between fingers are more spaced out than in violin. (OH yeah, and if you play cello, you can't wear a lot of skirts in cocnerts)

I'd go with the violin. I've always liked the sound of the violin, and it looks easier to carry around and practice with. Isnt the cello a lot bigger and heavier to carry? I think the big standup bass is different from the cello.

If you prefer to play melody, then learn the violin.
The violin is actually the soprano of the string family. Then there are the viola--the alto; the cello--the tenor, and the string bass which is the bass of the family. Almost all instrument families have a soprano, an alto, a tenor, and a bass.
