In the United States in most states the legal minimum is 2/32" tread depth remaining. This is the point at which the wear bars molded into the tire will be flush with tread. Tires (or tyres for our friends on the other side of the pond) start to have traction drop off dramatically once they get below 4/32" of tread and should be replaced at that point.

Its 1.6mm, as I had my MOT done and was told to replace 2 of my tyres. Also, you get 3 points per illegal tyre if you are stopped.

The grooves of the tread pattern must be at least 1.6mm throughout a continuous band comprising: the central three-quarters of the breadth of tread around the entire outer circumference of the tyre.
So there!

theres a minimum limit of 1.6 mm over 3/4 of the tyre, but thats the bare limit you would be safer if it was more.

1.3mm. Thats enough to pass an MOT, but i wouldnt really want to be driving around with with my children as your braking distance can increase up to 40% which is especially dangerous in bad weather
