This morning at 4 am we were woken by one of our Polish neighbours asking us to phone the fire brigade as the house across the street was on fire, his English isn't too good, he panicked and couldn't remember the number for the emergency services luckily he'd heard the screams, the house is rented to a young mother with a child, there were no smoke alarms fitted, luckily my hubby and our Polish neigbhour managed to get the woman and her daughter safely out of the house before the fire brigade arrived, smoke alarms are free through Government funding from the fire service, why are people still risking their lifes by not having them fitted and why are landlords getting away with not fitting them in rented properties.

I had one fitted in each of my kid's bedrooms, in addition to the two already in place at the top and bottom of stairs, by the fire brigade for free. They even let the kids in the street climb all over the fire engine and answered all their questions, however obscure!! I thought that legally rented accomodation had to have alarms fitted?
Well done you for helping those people though. I'm sure they will be eternaly grateful. x x x

I rent an apartment and there is no smoke alarm in it. I'm about to move somewhere else though and I intend to fit in smoke alarms and a gas alarm in the new place. I think they are really important. Such a small thing can save lives.

Well done by your hubby and neighbour! It's good that the family got out safely.

Good question. I don't have any because there were none in the apartment when I moved in. I never got one because I'm a smoker and I figured I might set it off all the time. For some reason, after reading this, I think I'll go get one tomorrow. I only smoke in one room so I can put it in one of the others.

It is a good job that your neighbour heard them. We have a couple of fire alarms, one on the ground floor and on the second floor. I would advise anyone to get at least one fitted, can you really put a price on saving the life of somebody.

My mom used to use the smoke alarm as an oven timer, if you know what I mean (terrible cook) so she pulled it down but it's okay, we know where to escape from if she ever tries to make toast.
