he was the founder of the scout movement, an idea he got from his friend William Alexander Smith, who foundered the boys' brigade, a movement to help young lads learn the morals from the bible and the discipline that Smith learned from the time he spent in the army. Powell, however, wanted an organisation that didn't have it's roots in a religion, but rather wanted boys to be educated in the things around them, hence they were more inclined to go camping and setting fire to mountains and crap like that. i hope that helps.

No one looks good if you highlight their bad points. Mother Theresa, Ghandi, Dr. King, JFK, the founder of Planned Parenthood... when you read accurate accounts of these people you see some truly horrifying things about them- racism and sexual issues are common themes. Baden-Powell had a horrible, driving mother who obviously left him rather warped. The thing is, some of the things you seem to be most worried about were more a product of the Victorian era than his personal issues. Young boys have been a common fantasy for men for centuries in many cultures- the Greeks and Romans thought that pedophilia was pretty normal. Victorian England was, by our views, a rather nasty place. We also know he truely loved youth and tried to help them the best he knew how. He was not really a big 'hero' of Mafeking, but he used his position to accomplish something that helped a lot of people. The Boy Scouts of America may be somewhat messed up on their stand on some key issues, but that does not mean that the founder was a horrible person. Not necessarily a man worthy of sainthood, but he and his world-wide organization has done a lot of good. What about you? You are casting some big rocks here, making some big judgements. Have YOU done anything particularly worthy with your life? Will complete strangers around the world remember you warmly a century after your death? Then of course is the bit about 'letting he who is without sin casting the first stone'. You comments are pretty damning. Are you a better enough person that you think you can do this?

Lord Baden Powell the man responsible in setting up the boys scout movement without him there will be no boyscout in the world. Thanks to him many boys have healthy and meaningful things to do apart from drugs and sex.
