I think you are you refering to the sleep and waking patterns of the human brain, rather than out working patterns.
our brain is split into three distinct parts - the oldest part is a reptilian section at the base and rear of the head, next to the spinal column. it is set on a 28 hour clock, and is re-set by sunlight. It controls most of the bodys functions ecept the stomach, which is a mamilian invention. thus like a cold blooded reptile, our body temprature drops during rest, and at 4 am in the morning it is at its lowest.
the central section, is our mamallian brain, set to a 28 day cycle, adjusted by the lunar cycles, or gravity of the moon, It controls the chemical energy produced by our stomach, and can overide our older brain for a few hours if needed, it is also our very short term memory, and our very long term memory, where we keep life saving reactions.
the majority, 85% is the nono cortex, the grey matter around the top, which is set by a weekly pattern seveloped by our working habits. so we get depressed, or lowere our brain wave frequency around friday, and pick up over the weekend, or whatever day we have off work.
so if your in an accident, the worse time to hit something in a car is about 3 am on Friday morning, on the full tide section of the moon, in late Jan, early Feb, as the emergency team that will save your life, about 4 am, will have the lowesert body temprature in thier ancient brain, be replacing all the skin and such in the mammal brain, and be megga depressed with all the bills after christmas and a long week of work - in the grey matter...
however, if you escaped the crash and have been in bed since midnight, then your brain will be switching from deep sleep, where it replaces all the body fluids and cells that need repairing, to REM slepp.- or rapid eye movement sleep - where you restore your memory each night, to learn and tidy up the previous days information.

Most alarm clocks have a snooze feature that will shut the alarm off for 9 minutes. Since most people don't like to just wake up and go, at 4:51 am most people are slapping the crap outta their snooze button for that last 9 minutes of sleepy time before getting up at 5am.

A heart attack when you realise it's not your spouse next to you?
Or perhaps the same result when you realise it is.
