The internet is composed of many interconnected networks. When you type in the name for a specific webpage, such as yahoo.com, this information is sent to a router, which determines where the server for the webpage is located and hence forwards a request to that server. The router's main function is to provide the best possible path from the source to the destination. In order to do this the router makes the use of routing protocols. Protocols are the means of communication over the internet.

A routed protocol is a protocol that can communicate between disparate networks. The classic example is TCP/IP. Conversely, a non-routed protocol such as Netbios or Netbeui is limited to the local network segment.

A routing protocol is used on routers to build lists of connected networks so that the routers can forward the packets to their destination. There are several in wide use, depending upon the needs of the system. The simplest is RIP; it's use is limited to very small networks. More common protocols in a large enterprise setting include OSPF, IGRP and EIGRP. The standard routing protocol for the internet backbone is BGP.

Hi Parasanna ,
listen there are two type of protcols used when ever we send a packet over internet through router.
these are Routing protocol and Routed Protocol.
These are simple to undr stand.

Routing protocols:- These protocol are used for find out the best path from all available(feasible path)paths to reach over a network. Routing Protocol are two types: -
IGP(interior gateway protocol) and BGP(Border Gateway Protocol)
IGP are :- RIP ,IGRP,OSPF,EIGRP & IS-IS
BGP is used as backbone protocol..

Rotued protocol:-- These are the protocol that are used for sending data over the best path selected by routing protocol..Routed protocol arre TCP/IP, IPX, APPLETALK

now read this for better understanding

If we have to go somewhere we find best suitable path (shortcut way to reach in other city) so we act like Routing protocol..

And by which mean of transport we reach other city is the routed protocol..(like BUS, CAR etc)

hi friends,
Routing:-
Routing is the act of moving information across an internetwork from a source to a destination. Along the way, at least one intermediate node typically is encountered. Routing is often contrasted with bridging, which might seem to accomplish precisely the same thing to the casual observer. The primary difference between the two is that bridging occurs at Layer 2 (the link layer) of the OSI reference model, whereas routing occurs at Layer 3 (the network layer). This distinction provides routing and bridging with different information to use in the process of moving information from source to destination, so the two functions accomplish their tasks in different ways.
Routed:-
Routed protocols are protocols used for communication purpose from one end to other .Routing protocols are protocols used for deciding routing tables.eg:

Routed: TCP, UDP

Routing:RIP,EIGRP etc

In computer networking the term routing refers to selecting paths in a computer network along which to send data. Routed is invoked at boot time to manage the network routing tables.
