bit comet is a bit torrent client, all the websites given up to now are hosts of bit torrent files, such as isohunt.com, torrentbox.com, torrentspy.com etc.
if you want a bit torrent client probably the best three are utorrent, azureus and bit comet.
utorrent is a very small install and uses much less memory than other clients and also has a good setup wizard. it's well rated my many bt users
azureus is a java based client i find easy to use and a wizard guides you throught the configuration. there's also lots of options for more advanced users that you may choose to hide. there's quite a few plug-ins available too. the downside is uses quite a lot of memory
bit comet you probably know about already. it's quite a good client but doesn't have the features of either of the other two and these are important to some people.
If you still want to use p2p networks such as edonkey whilst still downloading BT files, you could try shareaza. it has quite a user friendly interface too so might be more suitable for beginners.
bit torrrent is not illegal itself, what is illegal is the downloading of copyrighted material.

Best site ever for searching is btjunkie.org. Use azureus to download. Remember to purchase something if it requires a license.

uTorrent is the least invasive program, and it searches Torrentspy by default, although this is user changeable. It's great, try it.
www.filehippo.com/
Go to the filesharing window and select uTorrent.
