'I had never felt really depressed, in fact whenever I saw a similar question to yours I always thought 'it's all in the mind' get your finger out, think of all the good things in life, etc etc.
Then after a recent operation and some temporary medication I began to feel depressed! I read through all the 'bumf 'I got with the medication and possible 'depression' was a symptom.
I felt as if I had the weight of the world on my shoulders, any little insignificant problems I had were magnified out of all proportion, all these problems disappeared when I finished my course of pills, but I will never mock anyone with depression ever again.
It has been mentioned in some of your other answers that the symptoms may vary from person to person, that could be right, I'm no expert, but whatever I hope you get it sorted pretty quick.

there's a mix of stuff to choose from, including but not limited to...
loss of appetite (hungry until there's food in front of you, then you can't eat)
disturbed sleep patterns - waking early, unable to go to sleep, waking during the night, sleeping all day
loss of concentration - can't finish tasks, don't want to start anything
taking less care of yourself, because it doesn't really matter anymore
there's a lot of stigma surrounding depression, as you're supposed to be able to cope in today's performance driven society, you're supposed to push yourself further and harder and with less complaint than ever before. That's society's fault, not yours. As there are no visible symptoms of the depressed, it's harder for others to see the illness, and harder for you to accept the illness.
Ultimately the path to recovery starts at your GP. Go there.
