I have more ability in programming a computer, as well as many other people do as well, than bill gates did as starting out.

its not his skills.

it was the timing.

he was in the right place at the right time.

does he have skills- sure thing,
I think he did good for himself.

I don't like microsoft now,
but I can't grudge him his money.

I think old Bill started off with some tremendous, luck, timing, and ability/great ideas. However Microsoft is not at the top because of its products, which in many cases are clearly not superior to the competition. Unfortunately most people never see the competitor's products because Microsoft is absolutely ruthless in suppressing competition and maintaining their monopoly on software. If I wrote the world's greatest new program today and tried to sell it, Microsoft's lawyers would call me and offer me some BS price fort he rights. If I say no, then the MS software guys would quickly make an inferior product and market it. Then since they have more money and marketing power they would outsell me quickly. But wait, can't I sue for copyright infringement? Yes. Can I afford a lawyers who cant beat Bill's lawyers in court? Not a chance in hell. Bill is where he is because he doesn't allow any fair competition. America is supposed to be where the average Joe can come up with an idea and make a few bucks. Now it's a place where everyone works for minimum wage for a handful of multigazillionaires.

Some luck for sure. I heard that he almost wasn't hired for the first job that started him out. He was the second choice, but the first wouldn't answer his phone.
