Heya

I recently bought some a shirt and a pair of jeans from Guess? and the quality SUCKED. The embriodery of the shirt was thinning and coming off in the wash and one of the belt loops on the jeans came off when I hung it up by the loop and the (black) jeans are now gray after 6 washes.

And they charged the SKY for it! 100$ for the jeans and 69$ for the shirt.

So, do you guys think that this whole "designer label" stuff is crap? Because I feel really cheated. The "100% Quality" printed on the label is really ironic

The quality of designer clothes varies from one end of the spectrum to the other. Clothes made by bottom-end designer labels like Guess or DKNY or Bench are not always of the top quality, and quite often no better quality than mass market clothes. Sometimes even higher-up label's cheaper ranges are no better quality either. They rely on their name to sell their goods. Top-end and middle-of-the-range designer names meanwhile, such as Dior or Chanel, will nearly always be of very good quality, unless the item of clothing is a fake. Next time you buy designer clothes look at them closely and compare them to your average mass market clothes. If they really are high quality you'll be able to tell the difference easily.

the origin of designer labels is interesting...
origianlly brands were developed to demonstrate quality. to justify why an item may cost a little bit more.

these days its no longer the case, some brands are still branded on quality, most branding activity is image realed. IE buy this product because celeb A,B...Z wears it.

The link between quality and the brand is being broken. I'd always take a view that if the brand premium isn't that significant then the brand may have value, when the brand premium is high (ie you can buy a near equivalent from a reputable manufacturer far cheaper) then its almost certainly not worth it.

Many of the fashion led designer brands seem to charge a significant premium for shoddy goods, as you have found to your cost. The lesson is simple, buy clothes or goods because you like them, becuase the quality is right and because they are fit for purpose. Avoid the image led sheepihness that dedicated followers of fashion demand compliance. I dont care if its Ralph Lauren, Adidas or who ever. If you are paying for the image then you are being taken to the cleaners.

Personally if I were you id go back to the shop you bought it from and demand your moiney, or at least demand to know why there goods are not echooing hte brand values.

I think designer stuff is a big rip off, they have there stuff made in the same factories as other clothes but charge the earth for them, who do you think gets the money? That's not to say that i dont wear some designer clothes, but I choose them for price not the name on the label, I like Polo jeans because they fit me well, but I buy them at an outlet mall. I would hate to think of myself as a fashion victim.

Well I'm not 100% sure about now but my Nan used to work in the clothing industry. The used to get bags of different labels to put in the same items. They would either add the extras ie print on the front or they would send it on to another place for other bits. Basically same product different name/label. I would say you are only being charged for the name. It's a bit of a joke really.

Because its designer doesnt necessary mean the quality is far more better. Most of the time you are just paying for the 'label', the price does not reflect on the material and stitching quality.

When buying next time, check for obvious signs on the stitching and quality of material, to know whether it will last or not.

I wouldnt buy bad quality products just because they had a designer label on, as they say you are paying for the label. However some brands are quality, such as Pringle, Mulberry and worth paying a little bit more.

did you follow the laundering instructions. alot of designer clothes are dry clean only or have specific instructions. the black jeans should have been washed with woolite on gentle and NOT dried, and the shirt too most likely. designer clothes are superior as far as the hem and seam lines and general appearance. that doesn't mean they will withstand rigourous wash cycles and drying.

You pays your money and takes your chance. Designer labels are a status symbol and not a guarantee of quality.
