the rooster, otherwise the egg would be infertile!

Without question it was the chicken.
For the simple fact that an egg will not hatch unless if it is sat on for quite a while. An animal will not sit on another animal's egg, so that leaves the obvious conclusion that a chicken had to be around to do it.
