Well I guess, some people will like it. But heres my reason why its not popular:
The main difference between fried and mashed is that, yes, it's obvious, the form. You get to chew the fries more than the mashed. The main reason for chewing is that so we can ingest food easily. Another function of our body to help the first stage digestion process in the mouth is the saliva. Saliva moistens food in addition to breaking down some of the enzymes in it. Hence we taste it more.
Enter ketchup. Ketchup is sour (duh to me). Sour food is often used as a form of appetizer because it gets the saliva goin' on meaning, it prepares the mouth to taste the next food better. Notice how you have more saliva after tasting a jawbreaker? Or even thinking of something sour (Pavlov for you huh?)? Sour is the boot camp commander of the salivary glands.
Lets go back to the spuds. Due to being fried, fries have less moisture than the mashed. In eating the mashed, the mouth recognizes that its already wet, so it would produce less saliva than the instance if you are eating the fries. Less chewing time means less saliva too. Less saliva may mean you may not digest the enzymes in the mashed as well as you would have in the fried. The predominant taste is ketchup. your'e eating a dumbed-down bowl of ketchup. Who does that??? (to you who say yes, no offense meant)
Still, if its what one is eating since infancy, then he'll like it. To each his own poison. And the better explanation might be in the form of another question: how many sour sludges are there in the world of cuisine?

Who says it isn't? Try mixing it in with the mash, especially with a little grated cheese. For an extra treat, try a mashed potato and ketchup sandwich! Then you can start experimenting with HP sauce.... a whole world will open up to you!

I think it is the "FRY" factor. For some reason any foods that is fried taste that much better with Ketchup. Ketchup taste great with French Fries, Hash Browns, Potato Pancakes, etc.

It could be, its a matter of taste and I think how the potato is prepared, ketchup, in my opinion tends to go better with fried food, as opposed to something boiled then mashed...

It does taste relatively good on mash. But mashed potatoes is made with butter and milk (at least that's how I make it). Maybe that's why...

Why have you tried it on mashed potatoes? It's funny but we also put ketchup on hash browns. I know it is kinda of strange. Have you ever tried chili, salsa, or spagetti sause on mashed potatoes? (they all contain tomatos) I have tried both chili and salsa just to see what it was like and thought it was pretty good.

I like ketchup on everything! but in answer to your question I think it's because ketchup works very well with fried stuff but doesn't mean it won't work well with stuff that are not
