good question.
sometimes they dont have the lv sign on proparly but they make the knock offs really well these days so i think the only way is after a while the fake will start falling apart and then you have to chuck it.
i have an original and if anything goes wrong with it i can just take it to any louis vuiton store and they fix it up free of charge but if you want to go for a fake do. most people cant see the diffs anyway.

If it floats in heavily salted water, then it is a genuine louis v bag.

Er...it's Louis Vuitton - so if you see Lois its definitely fake!!
And if it costs under £1000 it's fake too! Easy - you pay peanuts you get monkeys!
