My new compost heap sems to attract loads of tiny flies, probably fruit flies. My old one (in another house) never did. Is it too dry or wet? too cold? not enough air getting to it or too much?

A compost pile is supposedly natural. If it's attracting flies, that's part of the natural process. Maybe you're adding more meat or sugars into the compost pile. Doesn't matter. The flies are great for it.
Their saliva disintergrates the trash and creates "compost."

Don't freak.

The reason for this is because you are not layering it up properly. To reduce the level of flies, take some newspaper and cover the whole top of the compost. When you have covered that paper with more waste, do the same again.

A compost heap generates heat, and because of this and the vegetable matter, it attracts flies, you should never put meat or any cooked produce into the compost as that would attract rats and mice, try using a container, most councils sell them cheaply.

i'm attending round 25-30 call outs for rats each day as we talk. Compost lots and persons feeding the birds are 2 of the most elementary causes of rat pastime close to houses. Please do not positioned any kitchen waste or vegetable remember on your compost heap. make confident that that is on a concrete base it truly is a minimum of two ft wider than the bottom of the compost bin.
