They're like doughnut-eating cops - I've never seen one. Do they really exist? What do they look like? How bad do they smell?

When I was young about a thousand years ago we were able to buy Stink Bombs. They wer a tiny bubble as large as the head of a drawing pin. They were made from very thin glass which when shattered was almost like dust. They were filled with a sulphurous liquid which smelled of bad eggs. We used to drop them as we walked into the school assembly hall, in church and any enclosed space we ever went to. We dropped them in a Woolworth's store once and they had to clear the store. They were great and generally harmless fun. No not an urban myth but very much a part of my life when young.

I've actually had the misfortune of smelling four different types of stink bombs, each one with its own unique smell.

The first one was set off at my middle school and smelled pretty close to a skunk.

The second was also in middle school and it smelled more like somebody farted. (EWWWWWW!!!!!)

The third was in high school and it was the classic "rotten eyes" smell.

And finally the fourth was the worst of all. It was in high school as well and it smelled like a mixture of sour chocolate milk and vomit!

The stink bombs I've come into contact with, back in my journeys through the high school underground, actually looked like little capsules or ampules that were made of a sort of hard plastic. You would break the capsule...and run, cause oh man do they stink! Once we tried to throw one through a drive through window, but it accidentally broke inside the car...talk about justice...

I've never seen one but the year I was a freshmen in high school, a group of junior guys set one of two off every week for about a month. They singled out one math teacher who used to cry a lot and they'd set them off in her classroom. I was never in the room when it happened but the door would burst open and everyone would start running out, covering their nose and laughing. They smelled like sulfur and rotting eggs. The whole hallway would reek. If you were really close, you're eyes might water. They smell terrible.

My brothers used to make home made stink bombs!
You take the seeds of wattle trees, and you crush them, then you cover them in wet yellow clay, making a sort of brick with the crushed seeds in the middle.
You dry the brick in the sun, then you place several of the bricks under the porch of the victim, in a spot where they will get wet when next it rains. (Preferably do this in summer, so they have plenty of time to sit before the rainy day comes by)
They smell like rotten eggs, and no-one knows where it's coming from!

Yes they exist, though you'd probably be hard-pressed to find them now.

Basically, they a little tube of fragile glass with a liquid inside, which I think is some sort of ammonia compound.

Throw them and they shatter releasing the liquid, or you can put them under a chair leg so when people sit down they crunch.

They smell pretty bad.
