I absolutely agree with the 'the moment they commit a crime they lose their rights" idea. It would put a stop to all these cases where the criminal sues the householder because he got a splinter while ransacking the underwear drawer.
I'm in favour of the death penalty in principle BUT I recon that a life sentence (and I mean life, not 5-6yrs for being well behaved) should be so awful that they WISH they were dead on an almost daily basis. None of this telly and an e-mail address rubbish and what is all this keep sex offenders separate from the other prisoners twoddle? Let them take their chances I say, never mind socialising with the other weirdos in a like-minded community.
And while we're on the subject, tattoos. On the forehead. For paedophiles. Says paedophile. Once they've done their time we'll add 'reformed', that way we'll all be re-assured that we can trust them with our kids(?!) and the police won't have to spend huge sums of money keeping track of them-we'll all know where they are.
And to all you woolly headed, politically correct, intellectually challenged do-gooders who want to cuddle them till they're 'better', crack on.
We'll move them in next door to you when their sentence is finished.
I'm sure you won't object-will you?

I don't believe in the death penalty, nobody has the right to take somebody's life. Even though murderer's etc have taken someone's life, two wrongs do not make a right & we do not have the right to take their life. However, it's easy for me to say that, I would probably feel differently if it was my family or freinds who had been the victim. However I do think life should mean life & there should be none of this getting out early due to good behaviour etc. And I totally agree with you that prisons shouldn't be holiday camps as they are today because that does not deter people from ever commiting a crime or going to jail again. You are right, they give up their human rights when they commit these crimes so they should not have any in prison.
I think in extreme cases then maybe the death penalty should be brought back as it is the victim that still suffers knowing that their attcker is still alive. Also it would certainly reduce the crime rate.

The two problems you mention are not mutually cohesive.
Unfortunately the death penalty does not work as a deterrent. One brief glance at the crime figures for countries where they regularly use it will show that.
Hard time, being just that ,is a different matter. Sentencing in the UK needs serious attention as does the degree of punishment given with each prison sentence.
Hard crime has to equate with hard time.If not to punish the guilty at least to make the victim feel their anger is vindicated.
And yes a life sentence should mean just that.

Always a sticky situation this one... i agree with you that prisons should be just that in the original sense of the word and should show no resemblance to hotels. However, i don't think the death penalty is ever the way forward. What right does society have to end the life of one individual??!! Look at the statistics and the cases of innocent lives being taken through the death penalty. If one person dies through a miscarriage of justice that is one too many. I think it is very easy for people to wax lyrical about the benefits of the death penalty, unfortunately these people often see issues in a very black and white kind of way and refuse to (or are too scared) to see the real picture

Good thought, sadly the victim of crime has fewer rights that the suspect, ask youself why there are over 100 support organisations for criminals and less than 10 for victims !
How about a licence, like a driving licence, you start with 20 points and get points deducted for offences, shoplifting 1 point, child murder and rape 20 points.
When you get to 20 it is clear that you are a menace to society and you should be locked up, but rather than letting you fester in prison you are blood typed and then executed when a decent person needs a transplant.
radical but I could see it working !!!

I agree with that, just read book by Nick Lesson, and apparently the jail in Singapore was very much like that, they did not even have a bed to sleep on. sounds like a good plan to me. Maybe then the criminals would reconsider. As for death penalty. Think that peodos and murders that can be proved beyond reasonable doubt should be used instead of animals for medical research.
The only thing I would use the death penalty for was to be hung in the tower, for treason against this country, IE terrorists.

I agree with you, if they can prove that that person did do that particular crime (Which they can now) I think it should be back to an eye for an eye & a tooth for a tooth. Why should rapists get to keep their lives/ their manhood, if they can't control it, it should be either removed or something should be done to stop them lifting it! It's all to easy for criminals now! A life sentence should mean life & not just 2 years. I don't think prisoners should be let out early 4 good behaviour early, whats that teaching them? That they can be evil outside of prison, but inside all you have to do is behave & your sentence gets shortened? I think that it is unfair on all the victims & families of victims out there to have such unfairness about!

Is is guilty until proven innocent or innocent until proven guilty? With that in mind, is it wrong to murder or only wrong unless its because that person murdered? Self defense killing aside, can 2 wrongs make a right here?
I think your issue is with the punishment. Short of commiting the same crime on them, which would propagate the act, the form of punishment for crimes is a highly debatable but constructive avenue of approach.
In this day and age of fanaticism, the fear of death can offer little in the element of deterance. Now being locked up in a 4x6x2 cell with no window and being forced to watch reruns of south park?
.
.
That can be punishment.

I agree in part with you - I have a problem with the death sentence only because of the mistakes that can be and are made in the justice system - once dead there is no saying sorry is there ??? However I agree with what you say about prisons - I believe it should be a prison sentence with hard labour - a cell, a bed, a toilet and hard work for 8 hrs minimum every day. xxxx

Nat -- look at the U.S. We have the death penalty over here. Does it make fewer people commit crimes? Nope. Do we have fewer gun deaths? Nope. Do we have fewer sex crimes? Nope.
U.S. prisons are some of the harshest in the western world (for violent criminals at least) and one of the highest per capita incarceration rates in the world.
For example, the U.S. has a murder rate of 5.56 murders per 100,000 people. England and Wales has a murder rate of 1.6 per 100,000 people. So is the American system something you want to model your criminal justice system after?
It's exceedingly expensive and a drain on our society. Think before you get to be so ruthless.
