Dragons have only been known as dragons since the Hellenic times, 800 BC- 338 BC. Prior to this date the (very broad) term or name was unknown, and so technically, they did not exist. For instance, the common species link between the Western and Chinese dragon lies solely in the word itself and, once stripped of it, the two become like chalk and cheese.

Also, when we really look at the "dragons" of the ancient world, we see that they are in fact little more than modified serpents; such as Quetzalcoatl (or Kukulkan the "Plumed Serpent"), Jormungand or the Mother Serpent. Not only this, but classing some creatures under the dragon title is subjective because the term is not inclusive.
This is not to say that dragons themselves could never have existed, it merely means the logic that dragons must have existed "because they are found all over the world" isn't accurate.

Giant butterflies were once often thought to be faerie dragons. One could easily mistake a giant flying bat for a small Western dragon.
Also, the amphithetre is said to have the eyebrows of a jaguar, which is possibly the result of a villager who had an unpleasant run-in with a big cat. Amidst the fear and confusion, it would have been easy to mistake the jaguar for more than it was. The Chinese dragon is said to be contain the properties or body parts of nine different animals.
At first glance however, it does not fully explain the consistencies through the dragon races (ie. the affiliation Western dragons have to fire), but then we are inclined to remember the world was far more superstitious when these dragons were first introduced.

In relation to physical dragon life, the idea of real sea serpents is the most probable theory. Whether or not the sea serpent can be classified as a member of dragon kind, they have shown enough tendencies, physical and characteristic, to lead us to believe they are, at the very least, close kin to dragons. If we were to return to the point and believe dragons did once exist, then the sea serpent could very well testify to dragon kind world-wide; over the years, due to changing environments, they may have evolved and returned to the waters from whence they first came. Possible evidence for this comes from the dragon traits some creatures of the deep possess, for example, the ability to breathe blue fire, and descriptions such as "a dragon head".
For years we have been graced with blurred photographs, eyewitness accounts (some fake or mistaken, and a few that have stopped and made us think), and of course, unofficial rumours. While there is obviously a lot of "junk" in the sea serpent mix, there is no doubt that the hundreds of people who've reported sightings in the world's water bodies must have seen something, and there has been nothing yet to suggest that sea serpents could not in fact exist, or that every sighting is faked or mistaken.
In regards to our earlier look at dragons as a hybrid version of nature, we can carry this idea over to sea serpents. The natural occurrences of "waterspouts" may help to explain many sightings. When a tornado forms over the sea and touches the water surface it becomes known as a waterspout. Water gets sucked up inside the spinning column, creating the illusion of a dark grey serpent, rising up out of the sea.

Theoretically, the most probable theory regarding dragon existence is the elaboration of nature idea. The idea of physical dragon existence is also likely for sea serpents, however the life of dragons has been put in doubt. Still, theory does not always prove to be correct, and there is a difference between idea and reality. There are still undiscovered avenues to be explored, and more arguments to reinforce old theories that have yet to be thought up.
Whether or not the dragon is in fact real, nothing can discount from the fact that they are very much alive in mythology, folklore, ancient societies and religion, right to today, where they have found a home in popular fiction.

Oh, oh! Discovery Channel did a documentary as if they did exist XP I thought it was quite neat. Well, Discover Channel aired it anyway.

Dragons might have existed, they might not. It could be that there was once a flying creature like a dragon but that it went extinct. Now. If you believe in evolution, you could say that our preancestors were around at the time of the dinosaurs and that they saw the teradactyls and passed on the information to their young, probably with a warning attached "they will eat you!" and as the generations passed the image of the creature changed to that of the dragon. Animals can communicate these things too.

Anywho. If you don't believe in evolution then... God said there were dragons! Or someone saw into hell. If you don't believe in either god or evolution I can't really give an explanation. Though I prefer to believe the first one, actually, I'd prefer to believe in real dragons, but I'm told I'm crazy.

In Myth and folktale, and faerie tale, the dragon is a symbol of infertility. ... It's also seen as a cousin of the serpent I believe, which, if you believe in god and the bible, got us cast from Eden and into the infertile land outside of Eden, hence the attachment of the dragon to infertility. The dragon is a powerful creature with wings that, if it still existed, would likely be the only creature man would fear because we'd be plucked up from the ground to be eaten like little mice. The story of the dragon could have been told to remind us that we are lucky in that we aren't plucked up like mice and that we should be kind to nature before something natural grows wings and shoots fire.

If that helps any or at all.

Many ancient cultures independantly included dragons or dragon like creatures in their mythology. We know that dinosaurs die out long before humans evolve. So the fact that so many cultures have a mythological history of dragons does suggest that they may have existed.

There is a theory that they "flew" using gases, like hot air ballons, and used fire as a method of controling decent. Because of the corrosive chemical required to great the gases all their bones dissolved after they died which is why we've never found any remains.

Just quoted a theory I heard many years ago. Take it or leave it.

Long ago, before time as we know it began, there were the Founders of the Universe, highly evolved souls that had already completed many universal games. Being creator gods, they decided to create a universe of their own. They chose the game known as “Polarity Integration.” This game is one of many that involves the integration of the Light and the Dark developed by Divine Creator in order to experience all that He/She is.
They need to have individuals experienced in this game to assist them in the development of the game in their new universe, individuals who would agree to become a part of it and see it through to its completion.
So the Founders put out a call to all souls in all universes that had completed at least one Polarity Integration Game. Their call was answered by ninety individuals, highly evolved souls that had just recently completed that game and were looking for another place to go in order to continue their spiritual evolution. This group of ninety was made up of forty-five Carians and forty-five Felines.
They arrived in this universe and began meeting with the Founders to set up the game. The Carians were given a planet in the Orion constellation as their new home while the Felines were given a planet in the Lyra constellation for theirs. So the group of ninety divided and went to their respective planets to begin the game.
The Carians (the Bird People) are the Parent Race of the Reptilians. The Carians are a race of birdlike Beings. At their most evolved state, the ruling class of the Carians resemble humans with eagle-like features and coloring.
Like the original Felines, the Carians first arrived in this universe when it was being created. They were etheric and, therefore, had to develop physical bodies from the life forms evolving on the planet’s surface. When their physical vehicles had reached a certain level of development, they began genetic crossing with certain reptiles that had evolved in the swamps and warmer regions of the planet. The result of this genetic program was the creation of a new hybrid race known to us as the Draconians. They were part Carian and part reptile.
In time the Draconians became more abundant and their first derivative the flying serpents (Snakes), than Carians.
The Reptilians are the Dragon, Snake, and Lizard People. The Reptilians are the creation of the Carians. The Reptiles have two other major sub races. They are known as the Winged Serpents (Snakes) and the Lizards called by some, the Lizzies.
The Reptilians are less emotional that their Human counterparts.
The Reptilians were given a creation myth by their parent race, the Carians, that clashed with the creation myth of the Humans. The Reptilians were told that they had the right to colonize all planets and star systems in the universe.
This creation myth has been the source of the many conflicts between the Reptiles and the Humans throughout the dimensions. Yet, it was given as part of the Universal Game. Without it everyone would have lived in peace and there would be no conflict. If this were the case, soul evolution would cease and the universe would become stagnant.
The Reptilians represent the Dark in the Polarity Integration Game while the Humans represent the Light. Through this game, of the highest order, all souls in this universe have the opportunity to spiritually evolve and rejoin the creative god source.
The story is too long, so I just cut it short.

I'm going to get a great many thumbs down for this.
Yes dragons existed and Yes they still do.
Here is a bit of truth that will make me sound like a total lunatic.
Dragons, fairies, unicorns, giants, mermaids, flying horses. wizards and magic all existed in this time. Our collective spiritual memories keep them in stories and in daily life. When the one god came they still existed in this time and so were written into biblical history.
You still reading?
When the one god decided to cleans the earth with a flood there were other gods and goddesses that did not like the idea. Gaia. Poseidon and others refused to allow it until after their children were safe. So it was agreed that the times would be separated and the children of the other gods and goddesses would be moved to a safe time where the flood would not harm them.
And so it was.
Now then. Some stayed behind. Mostly Man. See, Not all men belong to the one god. Lots of them don't. The reason they stayed was because they had family that did believe in the one god. They were not wiped out in the flood because their gods would and did defend them.
I know this all sounds silly. But I'll bet that some people reading it dream of the fae, the dragon, the giant or mermaid and have moments when they truly believe they know an elf or some other "Mythical" creature.
You can all give me a thumbs down now.

Chinese mythology has dragons... And some european mythologies have things that are similar to dragons, like the hydra...

But as far as existing, the closest things would be the dinosaurs and whatever scary creatures existed at the dawn of man that were passed down through word of mouth...

Celtic warlords from before the Dark Ages would take on the names of animals to strike fear into their enemies. The Cunedda family who were of the Votadini tribe named themselves The Dragons. The Cuneddas were ancestors of the historical King Arthur. Arthur's father's REAL name was Eniaun Girt but he was know as Uther Pendragon. The name means Terrible Head Dragon.
Arthur's real name was Owain Ddantgwyn. He was known as Arthur. Arth in ancient Brithonic means Bear. In his lifetime Arthur's people would have spoken Brithonic and Latin from the Roman occupation 43CE- 410CE. The Latin for Bear is Ursus. So he became known as Arthursus later shortened to Arthur.
So "Dragons" really did exist.

personal opinion is that the dragons most cultures think of were actually stories based upon the bones of dinosaurs. these bones are found all over the earth and primitive peoples possible used the word dragon to mean the same beings we use the word dinosaur to describe.
