I use to think Letterman was the best but this is before Leno was the front man to the tonight show. (Then again, nobody was better than Johnny Carson but that's an other question.) I think Letterman has lost his spark maybe because he has been doing this for quite a long time. Letterman has not grown or matured to an other level as I would have expected. He has become complacent. I am not a huge Leno fan but he has a positive, easy going approach. I do think Leno is more bankable and professional and the networks know it. If I had to choose between the two it would be an unenthusiastic vote for Leno.

Jay Leno. I've seen Letterman be so rude and insensitive to his non-celebrity guests a couple of times. That's when I decided not to like him.

i was asking myself the same question 2 days ago.
They are different. It's orange and apples.
Letterman is more hardbiting than Jay. Letterman's humor is wittier. But i think Leno is more relaxed.

I prefer Letterman.
It depends on your tastes as to who you think is better. Leno is much more mainstream, with the midwest type of appeal and bland humor that offends very few people. Letterman is a lot edgier, with humor that appeals to people that aren't quite mainstream. Leno is vanilla, Letterman is Rocky Road.
