the best way that i have found especially in a big city is to get lost in this city until you find your way around

Find the river or ocean. Most cities are situated near water of some sort, and if there is water nearby, the busy downtown areas are usually right there. You can usually find the business district, hotels, shopping, restaurants and nightclubs near the water, as well as decent neighborhoods to walk around and explore. I know there will be exceptions to this rule so use your common sense but finding the river has almost always led me to the most interesting part of the city!

speak to a local and try the local cuisine. Also make an effort to know the norms and culture so you can fit in more easily and feel more confident.
