Vauxhall cars use an engine management system called symtec which is manufactured by siemens of germany, this system has many sensors which deliver information to the ecu, the engine im guessing is a 16v ecotec engine, on this engine there is a device called an idle air control valve which sits on the top of the engine attathced to the throttle body assembly (look for where your accelorator cable is fastened to the engine underneath the black air inlet trunking) this is a common problem which happens a lot on vauxhalls, the control valve over a periiod of time "gunks" up and sticks so when you lower the revs it cant respond quickly enough and the engine cuts out, there are two ways you can cure this problem
1. have the valve ultrasonically cleaned this will solve the problem for a short time but it will return (if your not keeping the car long then this can be the easy option)
2. Buy a new idle control valve if you look on ebay you can usually find them on there or at a vauxhall dealers but they will be expensive there

Hope that helps

There are many causes for this problem - the fuel filter being only one. If the car is running fine at other times then this is unlikely.
You do not state as to whether the engine warning light comes on before the car cuts out (amber lamp in dash with pic of engine) if it does then an engine sensor or sensors will store a fault code which a garage with the diagnostic kit will be able to read. The sensors, when faulty or worn will cause the management system to compensate for what it thinks is a problem and possibly cause the car to cut out.
Other possible causes are blocked air filter, leaking vacuum pipes, worn/arcing H.T. leads and coked up throttle body.
These are the most likely and you should start with the cheapest and work your way through. Good Luck.

Does it idle okay in neutral? Could be the filter, could also be several other things. To preserve your sanity, I'd take it to a good mechanic.
