One of the best New Years Eves I spent in Durban was at the Roma Revolving restaurant at the top of John Ross House on the Esplanade. The views are amazing cause you get 360 degrees as the restaurant revolves (once per hour). Food is great too.
But the best bit is that at midnight you're in prime position to see the fireworks and all the flares etc over the harbour. Traditionally a lot of small craft owners take out their yachts and motor boats and these - along with all the huge container ships - all sound their hooters and send up flares and it's very festive.
To be honest, these days in SA I wouldn't put myself in a large outside crowd anywhere. Too much temptation for muggers and armed robbers who will use the New Years Eve gatherings as an opportunity.
Stay safe.

Deepends who you are and what you like...there are so many places you could spend your New's Eve - Cape Town and Durban - those are holiday destination and trust me, its just costly and over-crowded specially if you are from western countries - you will see what you have seen in 10 years back in Europe-If you are from African countries then its fine cause you will be amazed with many things those dont exist in the rest of Africa - I would suggest if you happen to be in Johannesburg - visit FNB stadium, they are hosting a "PEACE NIGHT" - its free of charge and security is granted as many political figures and local people will attend this gathering - I am not sure what is it but I know it has been well prepared, local intertainers will perform and so...something different for South African!!

Try out Hillbrow in Johannesburg! You will catch all the action-stabbings, shootings, fridges and washing machines thrown out of windows and lots more, lol! Ok ok, so a real place to go for new years would definitely be Cape Town! They have things happening all over there and you never miss a great party! Hope you have fun! Maybe I will see you if you come to Cape Town....;)

Why not go do something different and give one of South Africa's naturist resorts a try. I would suggest trying SunEden first.
