Most people write poetry as a way to express themselves, and yes it can help with their lives if they are writing about feelings they have,or experiences they have etc.

People write poetry because it explains that which is unexplainable conventionally; i.e., I may have a hard time explaining "love" to you. But if I say "love is like a rose" you get a hundred "pictures" of love...pretty, fragile, thorny, pleasent, etc. Via simile and metaphor, poetry allows us to compare and contrast the known (a rose) with the unknown (love). And knowing what something is like, and what it is unlike, and then naming it is how we lose fear and gain knowledge.
Poetry also has the ability to condense experience; I.e., I could write a book trying to explain war. Or I could say,
"For those who were there
No explanation is necessary.
For those who weren't there
No explanation will ever suffice."
Finally, poetry is pleasing because, done well, it is music and musical.
A life without the Arts, including poetry, is not life; it's alive.

I don't know WHY I do it. Usually, I get an idea in my mind and it's gone by the time I get halfway through writing it down. If I want to explain how I feel, it's something I work with to communicate a feeling to understand myself better because of its speculation or view. Good poetry has so many different things weaved into it, I can't find one thing it was about. But everything's connected and these links are hard to feel in the dark.

Poetry is just another form of expression. I find that I can write more poetry if I am experienceing strong emotions. It is much easier than writing articles or stories or a book...

Actually, its very relieving. Yes, it does help with their lives.

For example, when someone is extremely upset, instead of yelling things that they might later regret, they can write it down. The process of this writing can also calm them down from anger.
