it goes back to a time when there was no electricity, and people were afraid of what they could not see, therefore the night is dark and that is when bad things could happen. One of the big contradictions is when the term black is used in accounting it means you are doing well and red is the bad color.

I would say it connotes darkness...and intertwined to darkness is evil as commonly described pretty much in all sorts of religious books (no religion in specific).
