1066. The Saxons under the King Harold against the invading Normans under Duke William. Fought at Battle is Sussex.

Duke William (know as 'the bastard') invaded with a force of Normans at Senlac, (later 'Battle') Sussex, England and defeated an army of Anglo-Saxons led by King Harold Godwinsson of England, this taking place in 1066. He claimed Harold had sworn a holy oath that he, William, would become King of England on the death of Edward the Confessor, but had reneged on this agreement. The battle is commemorated in the Bayeau Tapestry.

Every Brit school kid knows this and there is no particular cleverness in answering it without reference to a source.

Just seen your addition, clever clogs. Not King Herold - he was involved in the Nativity of Christ 1000 years earlier. Duh!

I'm venturing a guess here, but I vaguely recall the Normans and the Saxons were involved (from high school history about 100 years ago :~) ) I also recall William the Conqueror?
