I recently purchased an Xbox 360 HD DVD addon and all the movies that I could look at in the stores seem to be in 2.3 and 2.4 to1 format. This is very annoying because I always hated watching wide screen movies on my HDTV with all that wasted screen at the top and bottom of the TV. What also bothers me is the movies I have bought all do not say they are widescreen versions and I hate it. I can't understand why anyone would want to watch a widescreen version of a movie on a HDTV and waste all that space.

I really meant why are they not making the widescreen movies to fit the full screen of 16:9 TV's as that is the standard ratio for HDTV's? Instead they are making the movies to have a Letterbox on 16:9 TV's as well as Standard tv's. I just feel it is a waste not to make the movies fit the TV better.

if you get a hd dvd and u feel u are wasting room by having it in wide screen did you even realize when you watch a movie in wide screen it shows more of the movie and in full screen it cuts out some of the sides!

If you DON'T watch an HD movie in widescreen on a 65" hdtv, then you're wasting a good 65" hdtv!!!!!!!!! Widescreen is EXACTLY as the movie is shown in the theatres! Full Screen is 'modified' in that the sides are cut off to make the picture square! Also, check your tv settings AND xbox settings to make sure the screen is set for 16 X 9 and NOT 'Letterbox'. I assume you got an Xbox 360 because you want the best. Also assume you got a 65" tv because you wanted 'the big picture'.
And I assume you bought an HDTV because you wanted the best. So why settle for less now?

Theatrical films in the US are released in two aspect ratios: 1.85:1 and 2.35:1, the latter often used for big blockbusters and action movies.
HDTV is 16:9, which is about 1.78:1. There are reasons for all these differences, but I wouldn't say any of them are very smart.

More and more movies nowadays are relased in their original full-screen frame, because two guys - the director and the DP - spent a lot of time deciding exactly what they'd like to show you in the screen (and these movies usually look freakin awesome, right?) More and more people realize they want to watch a widescreen version because otherwise, you're literally missing a big chunk of the film.

If you hate it so much, some TV's and DVD players have an option to zoom in, so the height fills the screen and the sides are cropped.

I actually used to dislike widescreen until a film student friend told me that full screen is basically the ends of the widescreen picture chopped off and then the middle part that's left is blown up to fit the screen. I agree the bars are annoying, but you get to see the movie the way the director intended it and none of the picture is cut off.
